Galicia forms one of Spain's 17 autonomous communities and is situated on the Northwest coast of the Iberian Peninsula: to the south it borders on Portugal, to the west the Atlantic Ocean, to the north the Bay of Biscay and to the east the Spanish mainland.
Spain has a population of 41million and is one of the 15 member states of the European Union, which has a total population of 379 million. At the moment the EU is in a process of
expansion, pending the proposed entry of a further 13 countries: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Turkey. This will increase the population to a grand total of 552
million high purchasing power individuals.
